Open Dental stays your chart and your system of record. This connects through Open Dental's API and adds voice charting on top of it. It is not a replacement chart, not a data migration and not a conversion. Every row it writes is an ordinary Open Dental procedure you can edit or delete in the Chart module like any other.
Existing restorations, findings and treatment, in whatever order they occur to you. Surfaces are understood however they come out: "MOD", "em oh dee" and "mesial occlusal distal" all land on the same three surfaces. Anything it cannot place on a specific tooth is handed back for you to say again rather than guessed at.
In the charting tab every finding is listed with its tooth, surfaces, status and procedure code before anything is written. You can edit any row (tooth, surfaces, material, status), and the code is worked out from those fields, not typed. When you chart while dictating an AI clinical note, findings are written automatically by default, and an Undo button removes that batch in one click. An office can switch automatic charting off in settings so findings wait for approval, or turn on preview mode to see what would be written.
Each finding it can place becomes a procedure on the patient's chart through the API: EO for existing work, TP for planned work, and C at no fee for a condition charted with your own condition code. What you said about the finding is attached to that procedure as its procedure note, and a diagnosis is attached when it matches one in your office's diagnosis list. When you chart from the charting tab, planned treatment is also written out in sequence (urgent work first, adjacent teeth grouped into one visit, endo before the buildup before the crown) as a note on that day's completed procedure. If no procedure from that visit is set complete yet, that note is not filed and the screen tells you so.
Nothing to install at the office. If Open Dental is already connected for clinical notes or eligibility, charting runs on the same connection. There is no second integration and no separate key. If you are not connected yet, we issue the API key, you paste it into Open Dental under Setup > Advanced Setup > API, and your eConnector does the rest.
No. It writes down what you said. It does not read radiographs or add treatment you did not say. The one thing it does on its own is put the treatment you planned in a standard order (urgent first, adjacent teeth together, endo before buildup before crown), and that order is in the note for you to change. In the charting tab it may also suggest a companion procedure your office usually plans alongside one you said, and nothing is added unless you tap it. The findings are yours and the clinical judgment is yours.
They are charted with the condition codes your office already has in Open Dental, such as a Watch or Existing Caries code, so a watch shows on the tooth chart the way your office has that code set up to display. We read your code list rather than inventing one. We currently file these as Complete with no fee, because Open Dental's API does not accept the Condition status from an outside program. What makes a watch visible on the tooth chart is your condition code, and a $0 row adds nothing to production. If a finding does not match a code you actually have, it is left off the tooth chart rather than filed under a code that means something else. It stays in the note, and the charting screen shows it as not charted so you can add it in Open Dental yourself.
Because Open Dental's API accepts only Treatment Planned, Complete and Existing-Other when an outside program creates or updates a procedure. We tested writing Existing-Current and Open Dental refused it. Rather than mark your past work Complete (which would put it in today's production), we use Existing-Other and say in the procedure note that your office placed it. If you need it to read EC, change the status on the row in Open Dental.
Yes, for findings charted automatically while you dictate a note. Right after they are written, one click on Undo removes that batch from Open Dental. They are deleted the way Open Dental deletes any procedure, so the row stays in the chart's history as Deleted. Undo only removes rows we can show AI charting wrote for that patient. It never deletes something your team charted by hand or a completed procedure with a fee. Rows charted before undo was added may not qualify. Remove anything else in Open Dental's Chart module as you normally would.
Anything we have already charted, or that was on the chart at the last sync (about every 15 minutes), is recognised and skipped, so re-dictating an exam does not stack duplicate rows. A tooth marked missing in Open Dental's tooth chart, rather than as a procedure, is not checked, so review missing-tooth rows. If you plan a smaller restoration on a tooth that already has a bigger one planned, it is held for review instead of written, because that is usually a misheard tooth. If you plan a bigger restoration over a smaller one that AI charting planned, the new one is written and the old planned row is deleted. A planned row your team charted by hand is left in place for you to remove in Open Dental.
Another office, unless you say otherwise. Silence never means your office placed it. Say "we did fourteen ourselves" and that tooth's procedure note records it as your office's work. The Open Dental row itself still reads Existing-Other, as explained above.
Yes, and that is the point of it. Say the same things while dictating a note and one recording produces both the note and the chart entries. If the doctor calls out the exam while the hygienist is recording, those findings are picked up from the same recording, and re-reading the growing transcript does not chart them twice. On Open Dental the AI clinical note attaches to a completed procedure from that visit, so the note shows up once the visit's procedures are set complete.
What you said about a finding is attached to that procedure as its procedure note, which is where Open Dental keeps per-procedure notes. That uses the standard Open Dental API permissions. If your office's key lacks them, the procedure is still charted, without the note. We do not put clinical narrative in the claim or billing note fields. The sequenced plan goes into a note on that visit's completed procedure when there is one. When you chart while dictating an AI clinical note, the clinical note is the record of the visit.
Yes. The planned procedures are added to the patient's Active Treatment Plan in Open Dental, the way any TP procedure you chart by hand is, ready for the front desk to present and schedule. It does not create a separate named or signed plan. If your office saves and signs plans, do that step in Open Dental as you do now.
You chart from our dashboard in a browser, on whatever device is in the operatory. Nothing runs inside Open Dental and nothing is installed on your workstations. The rows appear in Open Dental's Chart module the next time it refreshes.
No. The voice charting tab is offered only on Open Dental today, because its API lets us write existing work, conditions and planned treatment as real chart rows. On other systems, use our AI clinical notes for what you say during the exam. We would rather say that than sell you a chart write that quietly does not happen.
You already say all of this out loud during an exam. This is the part where somebody writes it down in Open Dental, using statuses that land cleanly in your chart, and tells you plainly where those differ from charting by hand.

Walk the chart the way you would out loud: "one's missing, two MO composite, three has a PFM crown, four DO composite but there's recurrent decay, so plan a DO composite." Each finding it can place is written into Open Dental through its API as a procedure on that tooth and surfaces. Existing work goes in as Existing-Other, planned work as Treatment Planned, and watches use your office's own condition codes. A missing tooth goes in as an Existing-Other extraction (D7140). Anything it cannot file cleanly is not written: it is either shown back to you to correct or left in the note, never guessed onto the chart.
